Overview

Pioneers in High-Grade Copper Production

Copper plays an essential role in global industries — a critical material for electrical wiring, construction, and renewable energy technologies. United Metals is a leading name in the production of high-grade copper concentrates, with operations across Zimbabwe, the DRC, and Zambia.

With an average ore grade of 5% Cu, we utilize state-of-the-art technologies including automated ore sorting, sophisticated flotation cells, and solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX/EW) systems. By leveraging these innovations, United Metals achieves high production efficiency while minimizing its environmental footprint.

Through advanced beneficiation techniques, the company refines copper ores into concentrates containing up to 30% Cu — meeting and exceeding international standards.

Methodology

Production Processes

United Metals processes both copper sulfide and oxide ores, each requiring a distinct but complementary production pathway.

⬡  Sulfide Ore Route
◇  Oxide Ore Route (SX/EW)
01
Physical
Crushing & Grinding
Sulfide ores are crushed and ground into fine particles to liberate the copper minerals from surrounding gangue material, achieving the optimal liberation size for flotation feed.
02
Separation
Froth Flotation
The ground ore is mixed with water and specific reagents to form a slurry. When air is introduced, copper-rich minerals attach to bubbles and float to the surface — forming a froth skimmed off to produce a concentrate typically containing 20–30% Cu.
03
Dewatering
Thickening & Filtration
The concentrate is thickened and filtered to remove excess water, resulting in a solid material at ≤8% moisture, ready for smelting or export in 1 MT jumbo bags.
04
Optional Refining
Smelting & Electrorefining
The dried concentrate undergoes smelting, heated with flux to separate metal from slag — producing copper matte. Further converting and electrorefining steps achieve 99.99% pure copper cathodes.
01
Leaching
Heap Leaching
Crushed oxide ores are stacked on leaching pads and irrigated with a weak sulfuric acid solution. The solution percolates through the heap, dissolving copper minerals into a pregnant leach solution (PLS).
02
Purification
Solvent Extraction (SX)
The PLS is collected and mixed with an organic solvent that selectively binds copper ions. This separates copper from impurities, yielding a concentrated, purified copper-rich solution.
03
Optional
Electrowinning (EW)
The purified solution is subjected to an electrical current in an electrowinning cell, causing pure copper metal to deposit onto cathodes. These copper cathodes are harvested for further processing or direct sale.

Technical Parameters

Grade Influencing Factors

Achieving consistent 25–30% Cu in final concentrates requires careful control across seven critical process parameters.

01 Copper Content Optimisation +
Target an ideal range of 25–30% Cu in concentrates for efficient downstream processing. This optimisation reduces slag generation and energy consumption in smelting operations.
02 Impurity Management +
Minimising arsenic, antimony, mercury, and zinc is critical — these elements negatively affect concentrate grade and significantly increase smelter treatment charges (TC/RC penalties).
03 Particle Size Control +
Precise particle size management during grinding directly impacts the efficiency of copper mineral liberation and subsequent flotation recovery. Too coarse causes locked particles; too fine increases reagent consumption.
04 Flotation Reagent Selection +
Proper selection, dosage, and timing of collectors, frothers, and depressants is fundamental to optimising copper recovery and concentrate grade. Reagent regime is continuously adjusted based on feed ore variability.
05 Pulp Density & Froth Properties +
Managing pulp density and froth stability is critical for optimising concentrate grade vs. recovery tradeoffs. Higher froth stability generally improves grade; air flow rate adjustments fine-tune copper selectivity.
06 Energy Consumption Optimisation +
Integrated crushing-grinding plants target ~20 kWh per ton of ore. Variable frequency drives (VFDs), energy-efficient flotation cells, and automated controls minimise power draw without compromising throughput.
07 Predictive Maintenance +
Implementing predictive maintenance programs ensures stable, continuous process operation. Reduced unplanned downtime directly protects concentrate grade consistency and annual output targets.
